Three Students Selected for BTD Scholarships Thrive

During Beyond the Desk’s inaugural year, three students were selected by our committee of teachers, staff, and administrators to be recipients of the scholarship.

These students enriched their educational experiences through participating in organizations such as the Student Group on Race Relations, MyCom, and Future Educators of America.

SGORR works to enhance race relations and diversity in the school district community through leadership and visits to the elementary schools from high school leaders. Students in SGORR meet weekly to discuss these issues and solutions and to plan how to connect with younger students. MyCom is an organization composed of Greater Cleveland’s youth that connects them to “neighborhood-based programs and services.” Our recipient was able to contribute to the Shaker Heights chapter organization.

Recipient Karma Peterson was able “to further [her] high school experience” through becoming “active in clubs and other student organizations.”

Recipient Makayla Howard was able to grow more in her school career through the program.

“Beyond the Desk helps a lot especially since working as a student is already hard and it helped me be able to continue and save money for my senior year as well as participate in an extracurricular that I love,” Howard said. “Too often I see other students who do nothing but work after school, but Beyond the Desk gave me the chance to participate in something I love to do.”

We are so pleased to have been able to help students like Makayla and Karma. Please help us continue these efforts next year! Thank you.
